OCR: THE SEARCH FOR LIFE METEORITES Hypothesis THE SETI PROGRAM If meteorites can transport living organisms through space, we must consider the following hypothesis: Could life have first appeared on Mars in a primitive form, then "piggy- backed" to Earth on a meteorite? In this case, perhaps we're all Martians! British astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle theorizes that, billions of years ago, the solar system was filled with biological "seed" that developed wherever conditions were favorable. Meanwhile, many scientists now accept the theory that some of the basic building blocks of life may have been brought to Earth by comets, asteroids, or meteorites. Biological exchanges between Mars and Earth are not impossible. At one time in the history of our solar system two tons of matter from Mars reached Earth and two tons of terrestrial matter fell to the surface of Mars-every year! It is conceivable that a living organism sealed within a rock could have survived such a voyage, even if it took 10 million years. Some scientists think that bacteria can live much longer than this ... MARS BETAT
